After graduating in January 1969, he took a position with Formica Corporation as a project engineering until he was called into duty by the United States Marine Corps to serve in Vietnam as a captain.  When his tour of duty ended in February 1972, Richard went back to his position with Formica, where he stayed for the next 26 months.

In May 1974, he began a 12-year tenure with Monsanto Corp., where he worked as a process engineer, production supervisor and manufacturing manager.  After he left Monsanto in 1986, he spent a year as a plant manager with Midland Resources and then moved over to Miles Laboratories, where he served as the manufacturing director until September 1990.

Richard was a part owner of Kemiron and spent the final 14 years of his professional career as plant manager and vice president for manufacturing for SNF Holding Co., until his retirement in June 2009.

During the time he worked for SNF Holding, Richard also served as a volunteer, board member and president for the Louisiana Habitat for Humanity for East St. Tammany Parish.

Currently, Richard serves as the vice-chairman for the Wright County Extension Council for the University of Missouri Extention program.
