Jerry R. Bayless is Associate Professor of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology. He received BS and MS degrees in civil engineering from Missouri S&T in 1959 and 1962, respectively. He has been an S&T faculty member for 53 years and has worked closely with students during that time as a teacher, academic advisor and student organization advisor. In addition to teaching a wide variety of civil engineering courses he served as freshman advisor, transfer advisor and was involved in student recruiting. He has served as interim chair of civil engineering two different times, 1986 and 2006. He was Associate Dean of Engineering for 20 years. Campus committee activities include the Athletic Committee, the Curriculum Committee and Chair of the Commencement Committee. Professor Bayless served as chairman of the Academic Council (now the Faculty Senate), the faculty governance group, in 1981-82. He currently serves as faculty advisor to Chi Epsilon, civil engineering honor society. He is a chapter honor member and was awarded the Chi Epsilon National Arthur N. L. Chiu Award for Excellence as Faculty Advisor in 2008. He was advisor to the S&T Student Council for more than 20 years. He is a member and past advisor to Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Bayless is secretary-treasurer of the S&T chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He is also treasurer or the Miner Booster Club and the Miner Alumni Association. He is a member and secretary treasurer of S&T Academy of Civil Engineers.
A registered professional engineer in Missouri, he has been active and held offices in several professional organizations, including the Rolla Chapter of the National and Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers (fellow and life member) and the American Society for Engineering Education.
His community activities include being a Charter member and past president of the Optimist Club of Rolla, involvement in youth activities in baseball, basketball and soccer, past chairman of the Rolla Park Board and the Rolla Board of Adjustment.
Professor Bayless is an Honorary Member of M-Club, a member of the Order of the Golden Shillelagh and was named an Honorary Knight of St. Patrick in 1999. He was Honorary St. Patrick and parade marshal for the 2005 St. Pat’s celebration. He was presented the Chancellor Medal at the December 2004 Commencement. He was named one of 28 Alumni of Influence and was awarded the University of Missouri Presidential Citation for Outstanding Alumni Service in November 2011.
