About Lafayette Gatewood III

Lafayette graduated from UMR in 1988 with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and obtained a Master’s in marketing education from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 1991.  He was a key member of the varsity football team and was inducted in S&T Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1983 football team which was the last Miner team to win an MIAA conference championship.  The 1983 Miners’ posted a 4-1 record in conference play and an overall record of 8-2.  Lafayette is an educator at University City High School located in University City, Mo.  He has been teaching at University City High School for 20 years and the head football coach for 7 years.  In 1999 he led University City to its first playoff berth in nine years.  He has coached three all-state players and numerous all-conference players at the high school level.  In addition to his high school coaching career, he coached one All-America performer while spending seven football seasons at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.  He has spent 10-plus years as an active member of the St. Louis Metro Football Coaches Association working on various committees in the organization.   During the football offseason he spends his time assisting his players with college recruiting and taking them to various football camps in the Midwest.  Lafayette and his wife, Prentiss, and their son Lafayette IV live in University City, Missouri.
