About J. Gary McAlpin

Gary graduated from UMR with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1973.  He completed a master’s degree in industrial engineering as well as an MBA from the University of Miami in the early 1990’s.  Gary was a magnificent athlete while competing in both football and wrestling at UMR.  A two-sport standout, McAlpin was a four-year football letterman at guard as well as an MIAA wrestling champion in the heavyweight division.  He co-captained the football team in 1972, also gaining first-team All-MIAA honors in the process.  The next year, he won the conference wrestling title and was bestowed as the recipient of the Gale Bullman Award.  He was inducted in the Miner Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and was named to the MSM/UMR All-Century football team in 1993.  Gary has served in both the public and private sector as a vice president, president and chief operating officer.  He currently is director of coastal zone management for Collier County, Florida.  He is registered professional engineer in Florida and is active in many organizations and boards.  He also serves as chair of the Plantation Acres Improvement District in Florida.  Gary and his wife, Sophia, live in Naples, Fla., and have four children.  Gary is serving on the Nominations Committee of the AMA.
